Forage Quality Slips in Southeast
University of Georgia Extension forage specialist Dennis Hancock reports that hay used in the 2010 Southeastern Hay Contest had the lowest average RFQ (relative forage quality) since 2004 when the contest began. Hancock contributes high daytime temperatures and hot and humid nights to the poorer quality as well as quantity of the hay.
This poor forage quality will have detrimental impacts on cattle farming. Farmers know they have to get the cow back into good body condition by the time she calves because it affects rebreeding. What needs to be considered is the impact cow nutrition has on the calf inside her. Calves from cows fed with proper nutrition will have heavier birth weights and will go into the feedlot weighing more than calves from hay-fed cows. How well you feed a calf before it’s born may be a key factor in future profitability.
